Jaundice occurs when bilirubin reaches a level in the blood that makes it visibly apparent. In newborns, this level is 5 mg/dL. In older children and adolescents, jaundice becomes apparent at serum bilirubin levels of 2 mg/dL. The term physiologic jaundice is used to denote the jaundice that normally occurs after birth. In full-term neonates, bilirubin reaches its peak of approximately 6 mg/dL between the second and fourth days after birth. Levels above 10 mg/dL likely are not physiologic.
