About 4 million neonates are born every year in the United States.1 Pediatricians, general physicians, and nurse practitioners provide most of the care to these newborns. Throughout this chapter, these clinicians will be collectively referred to as primary care physicians (PCPs); however, the information presented here is intended for all physicians and other medical professionals who care for neonates.
