Neonatal intensive care has rapidly evolved over recent decades, leading to improved survival rates for the smallest preterm newborns. These infants are discharged home after lengthy and complex hospital stays, and many have residual respiratory and nutritional challenges. In ideal family-centered care environments, parents participate in daily infant care needs, including progression to full oral feedings (breast and/or bottle) before returning home.
