Among the nearly 4 million babies born annually in the United States, more than 90% are born between 37 and 42 weeks’ gestation; however, preterm birth remains a major concern. In the United States alone, preterm births account for about 400,000 neonates born each year. From 1990 to 2006, the rate of preterm birth rose dramatically, to a high of 12.8%.
