The transition from hospital to home for the healthy newborn, the mother, and the family is a time full of excitement and expectation as well as challenges. Without the ready support of health professionals in the hospital setting, new parents often have many questions that arise after they have returned home. These parental concerns, along with numerous medical and social issues, drive the American Academy of Pediatrics recommendation that the initial post-discharge visit for healthy newborns occur 48 to 72 hours after leaving the hospital or 3 to 5 days after birth.
