Vascular anomalies, which range from benign to life threatening, comprise groups of vascular lesions that can be present at birth or arise during infancy. Historically, the nomenclature of vascular anomalies was somewhat confusing and often resulted in delayed diagnosis. In 1996, a multidisciplinary group of clinicians formed the International Society for the Study of Vascular Anomalies (ISSVA). The ISSVA formulated a classification system for vascular anomalies based on histologic findings and blood flow characteristics.
