Neonatal infections are broadly categorized as congenital (ie, present at birth and likely acquired in utero) or perinatal (ie, acquired late in pregnancy or during or shortly after delivery). Serious bacterial infections are further classified based on the timing of manifestation of illness: early-onset sepsis—when infection is evident within the first 7 days after birth, with some experts limiting the definition to infections occurring within the first 72 hours after birth—or late-onset sepsis, referring to infections occurring after the first week after birth.
