The human thyroid originates from an outpouching of endodermal cells at the midline of the primitive pharynx.1 This cluster of thyroid progenitor cells, called the thyroid anlage, is the first visible sign of thyroid differentiation and can be seen by the 20th to 22nd day of embryonic development.2 Soon after its formation, the thyroid anlage proliferates and migrates from the base of the primitive tongue (also known as the foramen cecum) caudally along the midline of the neck.
