The greatest risk of dying, for the pediatric patient, is within the perinatal period. For expectant families, birth is usually a moment filled with surprise, joy, and some trepidation about the responsibility of caring for a new life. With the birth of a preterm or sick infant, emotions become fraught with shock, sadness, and possibly anger and grief. When any newborn requires more than routine well-infant care, the family also requires care beyond congratulatory support and anticipatory guidance.
