Acute hepatitis is defined as inflammatory liver injury in a patient with no previous history of chronic liver disease.
The cause of acute hepatitis in children varies according to age. Overall, when a cause can be identified, a viral etiology is the most common (hepatitis A, Epstein-Barr virus). In a neonate, hepatitis can be multifactorial, and infectious and metabolic hepatitis are more frequent.
