Gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is a complaint that requires prompt evaluation. The presentation and differential diagnosis are broad, with a spectrum that ranges from an occult, self-limited bleed to a severe, rapidly progressive, life-threatening hemorrhage that can originate from either the upper GI (UGI) or lower GI (LGI) tract. A systematic approach is critical, beginning with the confirmation of actual blood that originates from the GI tract, an assessment of the severity of the bleeding, and the initiation of appropriate resuscitation.
