Neutropenia may be transient, chronic, isolated, or a feature of a systemic disorder. It is defined by an absolute neutrophil count (ANC) (white blood cells × percent [mature + immature neutrophils]) below the normal reference range for a patient’s age. In general, mild neutropenia is an ANC between 1,000 and 1,500 cells/mcL, moderate is 500 to 1,000 cells/mcL, and severe is < 500 cells/mcL.
