Surge capacity is the ability of the health care system to expand quickly beyond normal service to meet an increased demand for medical care. Constant preparation is required for these low-frequency, high-risk events. All hospitals, even those that are non-pediatric and non-trauma, may be faced with a surge in pediatric patients due to a disaster, pandemic, or other unexpected event. Children will be brought to a local, convenient hospital and not necessarily transported to a pediatric center further away.
