Unintentional injuries are the leading cause of youth mortality in the United States, with an average of more than 6,000 children and youth between the ages of 1 and 18 dying annually. Although pediatric health professionals have noted improvement in some areas, such as infant sleep-related death and motor-vehicle occupant fatalities, the injury epidemic persists. As with many epidemics, the risk is more significant for minoritized communities, often resulting from structural inequity and racism.
