Pediatric health professionals are trusted champions for child and adolescent health and, in this role, continually address barriers that impede children from obtaining optimal health. Racism is woven into the fabric of society, so addressing structural racism as a central barrier to health and well-being is necessary to change the environments in which children live, play, and learn. Pediatric health professionals tackle many other barriers to optimal health, screening for and addressing adverse childhood experiences and the social determinants of physical and mental health. Addressing the impact of racism on patient and parental/caregiver well-being is critical to fully comprehending and addressing patients' evolving identities, experiences, and contexts to provide high-quality care and effectively see patients into young adulthood.
