Northway, Rosan, and Porter first described bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in 1967 as a severe respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) of late preterm infants who were treated with prolonged artificial ventilation and a life-sustaining high fraction of inspired oxygen (0.8–1.0).1  In this landmark publication, Northway and colleagues described 4 stages of this chronic lung disease: acute RDS (stage 1), a period of regeneration (stage 2), and then progression to chronic disease (stages 3 and 4).
