Pulmonary hemorrhage is an acute episode of bleeding from the upper or lower respiratory tract, including the trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and alveoli. The onset can be characterized by hemoptysis, which is the expectoration of blood during coughing. Hemoptysis is uncommon in children, so it is important to consider the possibility of pulmonary hemorrhage in children with cough, hypoxemia, or respiratory distress in the setting of anemia.
