Insomnia is the inability to fall asleep or to stay asleep. It is often quite stressful to both affected children and youth and their parents. In young children, insomnia is defined as difficulty initiating and maintaining sleep, waking up earlier than desired, resistance going to bed on appropriate schedule, or difficulty sleeping without parent or caregiver intervention.
A number of classification systems have been proposed for insomnia.
