There are many considerations for the choice of antibiotic, as there are with any prescription. The product label (package insert) provides the indications that have been approved by the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA). The FDA-approved indication means that adequate and controlled clinical trials have been conducted and reviewed by the FDA. Accepted medical practice often includes drug use that is not reflected in approved drug labeling. Lack of approval for an indication does not necessarily mean lack of effectiveness but indicates that appropriate regulatory studies have not been performed and submitted to the FDA for approval for that...
