Health-related social needs (HRSNs) influence downstream health outcomes. This recognition is transforming clinical practice across all settings. Professional health care organizations have issued policy statements over the past 10 years, delineating the importance of recognizing and screening for HRSNs. These guidelines also include recommendations for how policymakers and health systems can address these social needs. Over the same period, federal and state entities have collaborated in proposing financing mechanisms to incentivize programming to address social drivers of health (also referred to as social determinants of health).
