Screening for the social determinants of health (SDOH) is recognized as an important practice that pediatric health care professionals are expected to perform. Although there is agreement about the importance of the practice, there is no standard for implementing social needs screening in the clinical setting. Important considerations in developing a screening program include selecting a social needs screening tool, enlisting trained staff, and creating a workflow for collecting, documenting, and responding to patients’ social needs. Developing a resource referral system for families that disclose social needs is particularly important to build a trusting relationship with families, normalize screening across a health system, and, through intervention, reduce these needs. As the field grows, several regulatory, billing, and funding changes are also emerging in support of expanding SDOH screening and responses.
