Pediatric clinicians have long advocated for programs that provide families with financial assistance and support accessing health care, recognizing the potential impacts of financial need and decreased access to care on children’s health and well-being. In this chapter, we introduce pediatric health care providers to local and national programs that can provide financial support and improve children’s access to care. Specifically, we highlight programs that provide income support (eg, cash assistance, tax credits, employment services), address concrete resource needs (eg, nutrition programs, child care, and infant supplies), and support access to care (eg, health insurance, transportation, and internet access). We review eligibility criteria for these programs and outline practical steps providers can take to connect families to support. Finally, we discuss how pediatric providers can leverage research and patient stories to advocate for evidence-based local and national programs that reduce financial strain and bolster access to medical care for children and families.
