Children and adolescents require approximately one-third of total calories from dietary fats. Dietary fats are found in oils, nuts, seeds, fatty fish, meats, dairy products, and certain fruits, such as avocado and olives. Dietary fats serve as a source of energy and aid in absorption of the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. They also serve as structural components of cell membranes and signaling molecules and have an especially important role in typical brain development during infancy and early childhood.
