Investigators from multiple institutions in The Netherlands conducted a prospective observational cohort study between 2008 and 2012 to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of Enterovirus (EV) and human Parechovirus (HPeV) infections in young infants with sepsis-like illness. Infants were eligible if they were <90 days of age and presented to the ED at a children’s hospital in The Netherlands with sepsis-like symptoms. Infants were included if they received a diagnosis of sepsis-like illness based on validated age-specific criteria applied by the treating physician.
