A five-pound newborn with a detective heart presented Robin Doroshow, M.D., FAAP, with the greatest challenge of her career.

The patient, known as Baby Fae, also challenged medical community thinking — as well as opinions held across the nation — regarding the use of animal organs for human transplants.

"It was such an unanticipated part of my career," Dr. Doroshow said in a recent telephone interview with, AAP News of her role in the historic baboon-heart transplant operation. "I'm still trying to sort it out."
