A new law requires the government to develop an adequate reimbursement method for physicians' pediatric services.
The measure calls for creating a pediatric resource-based relative value scale (RBRVS) which assigns weights to each medical service. The weights represent the amount to be paid for each service. An RBRVS is developed by taking into account physician work, practice expense and medical liability expense.
Rep. Fortney "Pete" Stark (D-Calif.), has been working with AAP leaders for two years in developing a relative-value provision. The provision was included in the "Social Security Act Amendments of 1994" (P.L. 103-432), which took effect Oct. 31.
