The next decade promises new vaccines, vaccines with reduced numbers of injections, combination vaccines, and restriction of immunization to the first weeks or months of life, according to a report published in the December Pediatric Annals.

Anticipated combination vaccines include: diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (DTP) with haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib); DTP and enhanced inactivated polio (IPV); DTP and hepatitis B virus (HBV); DTP with Hib, IPV and HBV; measles, mumps, rubella (MMR) and varicella-zoster virus (VZ); and trivalent oral polio vaccine (OPV) and tetravalent rotaviruses.
