Sexual behavior of poor, urban, minority adolescents is most influenced by their peers, placing them at higher risk for acquiring HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases than other teens, according to a study in the June American Journal of Public Health.

Researchers found that 12 percent of 300 African-American adolescents and pre-adolescents wholive in a poor, urban setting were sexually active by age 9 years and 80 percent were sexually active by age 15 years.
