AAP members can share their skills with pediatricians worldwide through a new AAP partnership with Health Volunteers Overseas (HVO).

HVO volunteer physicians work in developing countries, improving health conditions by expanding local health care professionals' modern medical knowledge.

The private, Washington, D.C.-based organization started in 1986 and currently has 27 programs in 19 developing countries, sending close to 200 volunteers annually. HVO's first project branch, Orthopaedics Overseas, became the prototype for other specialties: Anesthesia Overseas, General Surgery Overseas, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Overseas. More recent programs include: nurse anesthesia, dentistry, internal medicine, and since July 1993, Pediatrics Overseas.
