To reduce vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis, the AAP Committee on Infectious Diseases is considering changing the AAP childhood immunization schedule by increasing use of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV).

Under consideration is an IPV-only immunization schedule or a sequential IPV-OPV (oral polio vaccine) schedule. In current AAP recommendations, OPV is the preferred vaccine, but IPV may be used when OPV is contraindicated or when physicians or parents object to OPV use.
