Dear Colleagues,

As complex and controversial as health care reform was, Congress' proposed welfare reform would fundamentally change social service programs dating back to Roosevelt's "New Deal" of the 1930s.

While we can all support the intent of the proposed changes — promoting family economic self-sufficiency, personal responsibility in childbearing and child rearing, deficit reduction, and the wise investment of public funds — your Board of Directors believes that, if unmodified, such changes could potentially jeopardize the health and well-being of millions of our patients. If these changes become law, pediatricians will be the first to feel their impact.
