Since the announcement of the $368.5 billion tobacco settlement on June 20, battle lines have been drawn attempting to influence the fate of this historic agreement.

On July 16, the Academy weighed in with a review based on the premise that effective tobacco policy targeting children and youth must include: strategies to prevent initiation of tobacco use; treatment for youth who have become addicted to tobacco products; methods of measuring the success of these efforts; and strong enforcement to ensure tobacco industry accountability.
