Placing premature infants of less than 37 weeks' gestational age in car seats might put them at risk for injury, said a recent study, which recommends a car seat evaluation as part of prehospital discharge planning for such babies.

The study assessed premature infant breathing while in car seats to determine the effect of implementing the Academy's recommendation for pre-discharge monitoring in such subjects. Past studies involving premature infants have shown they are at risk for ventilatory compromise while seated in car seats.
