Hormones, not body fat, are responsible for return of menses in anorexia nervosa patients, a New York study showed.

Researchers at an eating disorder clinic studied 100 girls, ages 12 to 24, who had not menstruated for at least three months.

Patients filled out questionnaires to assess eating attitudes, behaviors and coexistent depression. They were interviewed, weighed, measured and tested for hormone levels.
