The International Classification of Diseases-Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) has been updated for 1999. The ICD-9-CM is a coding system used to report diagnoses and patient visits.

Each year, the ICD-9-CM Coordination and Maintenance Committee, an interdepartmental committee responsible for updating the ICD-9-CM, makes modifications to reflect newly identified diseases and reasons for patient encounters. Proposed changes are reviewed by the Coordination and Management Committee and presented for public comment prior to approval. The approved new and revised codes, as well as codes that have become invalid, are published annually in the Federal Register prior to their implementation. Pediatric-specific revisions also are reflected in the 1999 Pediatric ICD-9-CM Coding Flip Chart, a quick reference tool available from the AAP Department of Marketing and Publications later this fall.
