While initial triage did not reveal any substance use disorder among 100 adolescents admitted to an acute inpatient psychiatric unit in South Carolina, subsequent research revealed 33 of the teens had substance abuse or dependence diagnoses.

Subjects were 100 consecutive admissions, ages 13 to 17, all seeking psychiatric treatment. None had been admitted for a substance abuse problem, and outpatient clinicians had not identified substance use disorder before their inpatient admissions.
