As a pediatrician and the husband of a woman with unilateral microtia, I was shocked and offended by the article by Dr. Brent in the July AAP News. Dr. Brent states his "opinions" regarding this deformity. Dr. Brent's statement that parents "want the deformity repaired as soon as possible" and that the repair is "necessary to living a normal life and growing up to be a productive member of society" is not appropriate.

Dr. Brent's article appears to be self-serving support for unnecessary plastic surgery. This "approach" by Dr. Brent only serves to provide parents with increasing guilt (unless they do something) and transforms an otherwise normal child into a "vulnerable" child, as perceived by surgeons and parents.
