A vaccine to prevent respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) could reduce the incidence of acute otitis media in children, according to Texas researchers who studied 456 children with ear and upper respiratory tract infections.

From 1989 to 1993, investigators obtained middle ear fluid and nasal wash specimens from children ages 2 months to 7 years and tested for the presence of bacteria and common respiratory viruses. They also obtained serum samples to assess the viral cause of infections.
