What is the best way to make the case for fair payment for pediatric services? If you ask me, the answer is to give payers and the public the facts, and help them understand the true value of having pediatricians care for children.

So, how do we do that? Let’s start by more effectively communicating our issues to the insurance and managed care companies. The Academy is establishing productive new channels of communication with key staff at Blue Cross/Blue Shield of America (BCBSA). I have made presentations on our issues to the actuaries as well the medical directors of all the regional BCBSA plans. In addition, Alan Kohrt, M.D., FAAP, AAP District III chair, attended and presented at its national conference. Our messages have all been well-received and we have established a strong link at the staff level to help BCBSA translate our concerns into concrete actions.
