After eight years of work by pediatricians across the nation, President Ronald Reagan signed national vaccine injury compensation legislation into law on Nov. 7.
Passage of the legislation had been at the top of the Academy's legislative agenda and occurred only after "a tremendous amount of effort by literally thousands of pediatricians across the country," said AAP President Martin H. Smith, M.D.
Several times during recent weeks, the legislation had been nearly scuttled.
