In light of the recent withdrawal and recall of single-dose vials of Menomune, Aventis Pasteur has agreed to refund pediatricians for unused doses from 10-dose vials that have expired (see sidebar, below). However, Aventis only will reimburse pediatricians for up to five doses, even if more than five doses are returned.
Four lots of Menomune – A/C/Y/W-135 vaccine (meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine, groups A, C, Y and W-135) were recalled because they failed potency testing, resulting in reduced protection against meningococcal disease caused by serogroup A. In addition, single-dose vials were withdrawn as a precaution because serogroup A protection could decline before the vaccine expires.
Single-dose vials packaged both individually and in five-dose packages are affected, but 10-dose vials are not affected.
