The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are continuing to investigate the possible causes behind the high numbers of Fusarium keratitis cases. As of May 9, CDC has received reports of 106 confirmed cases, 12 possible cases and 80 cases still under investigation in 32 states and territories.

Complete data are available for 98 of the 106 confirmed cases. Ninety-five percent of individuals whose cases were confirmed wore contact lenses. Among those using contacts, 63.4% reported using any Bausch & Lomb ReNu with MoistureLoc solution.

On April 13, Bausch & Lomb asked U.S. retailers to temporarily remove ReNu with MoistureLoc from their shelves and recommended that consumers stop using this product until the investigation is concluded. The company issued the voluntary withdrawal because of the disproportionate number of infected people who used ReNu with MoistureLoc.
