Jerold F. Lucey, M.D., FAAP, influential Pediatrics editor for the past 34 years, will retire in January 2009. Associate Editor Ralph D. Feigin, M.D., FAAP, will succeed him.

Dr. Lucey has outlasted any of his predecessors as top editor since the AAP journal was founded in 1948. When he became editor in 1974 at age 46, Dr. Lucey also was the youngest to assume that role in the journal’s history.

The internationally renowned neonatologist will become emeritus editor.

While at the helm of the most-cited and most widely distributed journal in the field, Dr. Lucey has witnessed decades of published research, including landmark papers on the value of surfactant replacement in respiratory distress syndrome and advances in sudden infant death syndrome.
