Effective May 23, community pharmacies will not fill prescriptions for Medicare and Medicaid patients without the prescriber’s National Provider Identifier (NPI).

On that date, the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services will require that all pharmacies submit the prescriber’s NPI on prescription drug claims to obtain reimbursement payment. Claims may be rejected by the insurer if the prescriber lacks an NPI, which may result in a patient paying out-of-pocket for the prescription.

To obtain an NPI, visit the National Plan & Provider Enumeration System Web site, https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/NPPES/Welcome.do.
