"From a public health point of view, the best defense against AIDS is total abstinence," according to U.S. Surgeon General C. Everett Koop, M.D., FAAP. "And that is certainly the message we should get across to our children.

"But children do grow up, and, as adults, most of them won't remain abstinent," Dr. Koop said at an April meeting on AIDS sponsored by the American Medical Association and cosponsored by the Academy and more than 70 other organi zations.
