TV and children: Curbing violence

In recent testimony before a Senate subcommittee, the Academy endorsed proposed legislation aimed at curtailing violence on children's television.

Episodes of televised violence have doubled since 1980 and now occur about 13 times each hour during prime time viewing. During cartoons, television violence occurs at least 20 times each hour, AAP Spokeswoman Lillian Beard, M.D., told members of a Senate judiciary subcommittee.
