Founding head of the pediatric department at Louisiana State University (LSU) School of Medicine, Joseph A. Little Jr., M.D., FAAP, of Nashville, Tenn., died Nov. 3. He was 91.

Dr. Little received his medical degree and completed an internship in pediatrics at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He served for two years in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, then resumed his pediatric training at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.

In 1950, he became an assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of Louisville. While there, in conjunction with the American Heart Association and the Public Health Service, he initiated the establishment of children’s heart clinics across the state of Kentucky.

In 1962, he returned to Vanderbilt’s pediatrics department as associate professor.

Dr. Little was recruited to become the first chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the new LSU Medical School in Shreveport, La., in 1970, where he remained until his retirement...
