To assist pediatricians in determining when to order diagnostic imaging, the American College of Radiology (ACR) Appropriateness Criteria have been updated to reflect the most recent science available.
The evidence-based criteria were developed by expert panels in diagnostic imaging, interventional radiology and radiation oncology and include input from more than 75 physicians from specialties outside of radiology/radiation oncology, including representatives from the Academy.
The Pediatric Imaging section includes updates to the Vomiting in Infants up to 3 Months of Age. Also revised is the section, Acute Trauma to the Knee, which pertains to both pediatric and adult patients.
Other pediatric-specific imaging topics include: Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip, Fever without Source, Headache, Hematuria, Limping Child (ages 0-5 years), Seizures, Sinusitis, Suspected Physical Abuse and Urinary Tract Infection. Additional pediatric updates will be made to the Appropriateness Criteria by the end of 2011.
