For Thomas K. McInerny, M.D., FAAP, the light bulb moment came about 15 years into his pediatric career.

While working at the University of Rochester Medical Center, a fellow doctor suggested there may be ways to improve children’s health outside the doctor’s office. The idea struck a chord with Dr. McInerny, who made it the guiding principle of a career that has spanned more than four decades and involved several groundbreaking initiatives.

He also is making it the focal point of his campaign for president of the Academy, a position that he says he would use to help members respond to the rapid changes occurring in the field.
