Following are some of the 2012 changes to the International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) codes that may be reported by pediatricians and pediatric specialists. These new codes are effective and must be accepted by third-party payers on Oct. 1. In accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services no longer allows covered entities a grace period to implement new and revised codes.
The ICD-9-CM Coordination and Maintenance Committee will implement a partial freeze of the ICD-9-CM and ICD-10 (ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS) codes prior to the implementation of ICD-10 on Oct. 1, 2013. Therefore, the last regular, annual updates to both ICD-9-CM and ICD-10 code sets will be made on Oct. 1.
